MARIANNE FAITHFULL - Broken English 1979

Marianne Faithfull was forever tied in with Mick Jagger and the notorious drugs raid .. think fur coat and Mars Bars. She famously recorded the Jagger/Richard composition 'As Tears Go By' in 1964.
After recording in the 60s she disappeared for quite a while, but came back with a hiss and a roar in the late 70s.

In-between she had suffered from drug abuse, severe laryngitis and had been living on London streets.
When she did return to the studio her voice was totally different to the angelic girlish vocals of her earlier work. It was now lower, cracked, weather-beaten and full of character.

This is my copy of Broken English, bought in New Zealand when it was first released. It's not complete though. On side 2 the last track is totally blank. A notation on the back of the album states ..
* The track WHY D'YA DO IT omitted due to lyric content
The album does however contain one of my all time favourite tracks .. 'The Ballad of Lucy Jordan'. There's also a gritty rendition of John Lennon's 'Working Class Hero.
And yes, I did eventually get the full version of the album.
